20 Yard Dumpster Rental in North County San Diego
The 20 yard is the size most people actually need. It swallows a full garage clear-out, a kitchen or bathroom remodel, or a whole-house cleanout, and it still fits on a normal driveway. Flat rate of $795 with delivery, pickup, and disposal included, from a licensed C-61/D-63 contractor who can legally haul the construction debris most companies have to turn down.
What actually fits in a 20 yard dumpster
Twenty cubic yards is roughly six pickup truck loads. People underestimate this constantly, so here is the honest version in things you can picture rather than volume you cannot.
About 6 Pickup Loads
Full-size truck beds, packed levelA Two-Car Garage
Cleared down to the slab, boxes and allA Kitchen Or Bath Remodel

Around 25 to 30 squares of shinglesIf you are between sizes, go up. The cost difference between a 15 and a 20 yard is small, and a second haul because you undersized is not. Tell us what you are clearing on the phone and we will tell you honestly which one you need, even when that is the cheaper one.
20 yard dumpster dimensions

The container
Roughly 22 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 4.5 feet tall. The walls are low enough to walk heavy items in rather than lift them over the side, which is the practical difference between a 20 and a taller 30 or 40 yard box.

The space you need
Plan on about 60 feet of straight clearance to drop and pick up, and around 23 feet of vertical clearance for the lift. We put boards down on every driveway. If your access is steep or narrow, our hooklift truck places containers where a standard roll-off cannot go.
$795, and here is what that includes
One number, quoted before delivery. Roll-off pricing in San Diego County varies widely between companies, and a lot of that spread is fees that appear after the fact rather than a real difference in service.

Boards down, no chargeThe two things that can change your final number are overweight loads and trip fees, and both are avoidable. We will tell you before delivery what the weight allowance is for your load, and a trip fee only happens when the truck arrives and cannot place or collect the container, which is almost always a blocked driveway or a parked car. We call ahead. For larger projects, 0% financing is available.
Is a dumpster cheaper than hauling it to the dump yourself?
It depends on volume, and we would rather you know before you book. If you have one or two truckloads and a free weekend, hauling it yourself is usually cheaper. Transfer station fees plus fuel will come in under a roll-off rental at that size.
Past about four loads it flips. Six trips to the transfer station is a full weekend, two tanks of fuel, six sets of gate fees, and a truck bed you have to load and unload twice. A 20 yard sits in your driveway and you load it once, on your own schedule. If the job is smaller than that, ask us about full-service junk removal instead, where you pay only for the space your pile takes up.
What can and cannot go in
Yes, load it
Household junk and furniture, mattresses, appliances, carpet and flooring, cabinets, drywall, lumber, roofing, yard and green waste, and general remodel debris. As a licensed C-61/D-63 contractor we can legally take construction and demolition debris that most junk haulers cannot.
No, keep it out
Paint, solvents, oil, fuel, chemicals, asbestos, batteries, tires, and pressurized tanks. These are hazardous waste and carry real fines if they reach the transfer station. Concrete, dirt, and asphalt are fine but need a dedicated heavy-debris container, because weight, not volume, is the limit on those loads.
20 yard dumpster rental FAQ
How much does it cost to rent a 20 yard dumpster near me?
Ours is a flat $795 across North County San Diego, quoted before delivery, with delivery, pickup, disposal up to the weight allowance, and the rental period included. Prices in the county vary a lot between companies, and much of that gap is fees added after the fact rather than a difference in the service. Call (866) 345-5646 and you will get the number up front.
How much stuff does a 20 yard dumpster hold?
About six full-size pickup loads. In practice that is a two-car garage cleared to the slab, a kitchen or bathroom remodel including cabinets and tile, a three-bedroom house cleanout, or roughly 25 to 30 squares of roofing tear-off.
How large is a 20 yard roll-off dumpster?
Roughly 22 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 4.5 feet tall. The low walls matter more than the numbers: you can walk a couch or a water heater in rather than lift it over the side.
Is there a weight limit, and what happens if I go over?
Every dumpster includes the first ton. If your load goes over, the overage is billed per ton (industry rates run about $40 to $200 per ton). There is a 5 ton limit due to vehicle carrying capacity. Heavy materials like concrete, dirt, brick, and roofing hit weight limits fast, so for those we’ll set you up with a smaller heavy-debris dumpster. We’ll help you pick a size that keeps you under the limit.
What can’t go in a 20 yard dumpster?
No household hazardous waste – paints, motor oil, batteries, pesticides, anything labeled Flammable/Toxic/Corrosive – plus tires, asbestos, and gasoline. In California these have to go to a hazardous- waste collection facility, not the landfill. Appliances and e-waste usually can’t go in a standard roll-off either, but we can take those separately through our junk removal service and route them to the right recycling facility
Do I need a permit for a 20 yard dumpster?
Not if it sits on your own driveway or property, which covers most jobs. If it has to sit on a public street, your city may require an encroachment permit, and rules differ between Vista, Oceanside, Carlsbad, and the rest of the county. Tell us where it needs to go and we will tell you whether a permit applies.
How soon can you deliver?
Same-day and next-day delivery are available across North County San Diego depending on the schedule. Book early in the day for the best chance at same-day. Call (866) 345-5646 for the soonest drop-off.
Which dumpster is best for a roofing job?
Roofing shingles are heavy, so a smaller heavy-debris dumpster is usually smarter than a large light-debris one – you’ll hit the weight limit long before you run out of space. Tell us the roof size and we’ll match the container and weight allowance.
Not sure the 20 is right?
The 13 and 15 yard are better for a single room, a small garage, or a bathroom remodel, and the 40 yard is for major renovations and commercial work. See all roll-off dumpster sizes and pricing, or read about tight and steep driveway placement if access is the problem. Renting for a jobsite? We run Net-30 contractor accounts with recurring swaps. Clearing a property rather than remodeling one? Full-service junk removal may cost less, and estate cleanouts are handled start to finish.
